Visionary creates mobile houses for quake victims

In the midst of this philanthropic deluge, ‘Green Earth’ has emerged as a company with a realistic solution to the problem of providing shelter to the millions left homeless by the quake. Headed by Zafar Bhatti – son of war hero Maj Aziz Bhatti Shaheed (Nishaan-e-Haider) – ‘Green Earth’ has manufactured environmentally-friendly mobile houses made of recycled plastic and Tetra Pak cartons. 16 gauge rustproof steel pipes support the houses, which measure 12 x 12 feet and are shaped like huts. The 8mm-thick outer layer of the houses are made of high density polythene, laminated with cloth and spray painted for extra protection. A one-inch glass-wool insulation layer has been placed between the inner and the outer sheets to fireproof the structure. The inner walls have alos been painted with fire retardant and water resistant paint.

The houses are water, wind and snow proof. A single unit weighs approximately 1500 kg and can last for five to ten years. The houses, according to Bhatti, are hygienic and easy to clean. Each house has a 3 x 6.5 ft door and 2 windows (with fly proof wire mesh) at the front and one ventilator (with fly proof wire mesh) at the back for cross ventilation. They have a sloping roof and are aesthetically pleasing, while being practical and weather resistant. One such house can accommodate five people, he said.

Bhatti, who originally deals in recycled plastic, told Daily Times on Wednesday that several multinational companies had shown an interest in buying his prefabricated houses to donate them to earthquake victims in the quake-hit areas. He said that one such house cost Rs 95,000 five houses could be loaded on one truck. The owner of ‘Green Earth’ said that he would also donate 6 to 10 houses with an additional bench and a desk each for quake victims, which could be used for makeshift schools.

He said that the government had also invited him to present his -houses in Islamabad on November 18, adding that presently his plant had the capacity to produce three houses per day but if the need arose, they could increase production to seven or ten houses per day.
