Seismic activity to continue for next 24-36 hrs
Dr Ch Qamar Zaman, the director-general Meteorological Office said that 150 aftershocks of the devastating October 8 earthquake had been recorded by 8:30 pm Sunday (October 9) while the activity is likely to continue for the next 24 to 36 hours.
Talking to The News, he said the last aftershock that was recorded at 1:30 pm on Sunday was the strongest and showed 5.9 on the Richter scale. He said the next 24 to 36 hours are the “critical period” during which more aftershocks are likely to be recorded.
The DG Met Office said that the aftershocks received last night at 2:13 am and 2:45 am measured 5.7 and 5.5 on the Richter scale while another aftershock measuring 5.5 was recorded at 12:09 pm Sunday.
“However, most of the aftershocks measured below 5 on Richter scale, i.e between 4 and 5 and mostly felt like tremors. Now it seems that the seismic activity is gradually subsiding and if we may follow the pattern of these aftershocks it seems that these are loosing intensity gradually,” Dr Qamar Zaman said.
Yet, he said, the next 36 hours remain the “critical period”. “That is the ‘fault creation period’ and then the ‘fault settling down’ phase would start that is likely to last for at least three to four weeks during which we may experience some mild earthquakes too,” he said. Source: The News
