Pakistani Army developed Geographic Information System in quake- hit areas

Pakistan Army Survey Group has developed Geographic Information System (GIS) containing relevant data and information about the magnitude of disaster caused by the earthquake in NWFP and Azad Kashmir. According to an ISPR press release, GIS will help provide required information about the condition of roads, location and height of villages and population when linked with NADRA and satellite images.

The system would also assist in relief operations and rehabilitation programme besides helping aid agencies operating in the area by providing them exact data about the population affected in case the road is blocked by land slide and snowfall. When this system is linked with meteorological Department, it will provide recommendations and suggestions to aid agencies regarding relief operations to be launched in the affected areas. Army Survey Group with the assistance of Turkish Disaster Management team has completed survey in areas located on the fault line including Tehsil Mansehra, Dev Ghrain, Kachi Basti, Bafa and Garhi Habibullah areas whereas drilling is in progress at Balakot.

The survey will be completed in affected areas of NWFP in one week time and would be conducted under supervision of Director General Engineers Major General Imtiaz Ahmad. The engineers are using latest technology in seismic survey, collection of earth texture data and resistance of earth. Engineers installed high tech sensors connected with computerized laboratory to study seismic changes in quake hit area. The survey team is also accompanied by town planners who will suggest the type of houses to be constructed in the area.

Army Survey group has designed three dimensional (3-D) models suggesting lay out of the affected area which will assist in the planning of rehabilitation, house designing and training of volunteers. Meanwhile, army aviations carried out 50 sorties from Mansehra to various locations in affected areas and airlifted 24.230 tons of supplies including tents, blankets, quilts, ration and medicine. Seven sorties were flown from PAF Base Chaklal to the affected areas of the province.

The United Nations MI-8 and MI-26 helicopters carried 14 tons of food items, 2 tons of iron sheets and 2.3 tons of cargo to Jared, Chatter Plain and Rashang. Pakistan Army dispatched 33 trucks loaded with relief goods from Mansehra to Chattar plain, Ghari Habibullah, Balakot, Shinkiari, Battagram, Darband and other areas. Army rescue parties delivered 53,185 kilograms of relief goods, 1,534 tents and 1,280 blankets to the quake- ravaged areas. Around 1,600 tents, 3,909 blankets and 171 tarpaulins were handed over to survivors at distribution points established by Pakistan Army in the disaster struck areas.

Sounds good. Now if someone could tell me where can I obtain this GIS information? My group of engineers and and other volunteers are planning to be instrumental in rebuilding of Balakot area.

As far as I know, most of the GIS info including elevation DEM data etc. were already available in public domain. I am interested in finding out that what did Pak Army do in addition to what was already available? Also I am wondering what this drilling is for and what is to be determined from drilling that is occuring in Balakot as mentioned in this press release. Do you have the coordinates for these drill sites? Could you please email me this info at nasirmaziz@gmail.com. Thanks.

Mr. Usman… words with no backing mean nothing. I wanted some facts and you spilled your opinion… I am sure what you are saying is right but can you back it up a little? Easy to say but to lay it out… I haven’t heard a word on what I was requesting. That tells me something.
