Mobile banks to function in quake-hit areas

The ministry of finance and commercial banks have agreed that mobile bank teams will operate in the designated earthquake affected areas so that affectees are ensured speedy disbursement of money, with which they can start reconstruction efforts.

No fee or charge would be realized from affectees for opening and operating accounts. The condition of maintaining minimum balance will also not apply to the accounts of earthquake affectees in AJK and the NWFP.

Omar Ayub Khan, Minister of State for Finance, held a meeting on Monday with senior representatives of banks, including Habib Bank, Khushali Bank, MCB, Bank of Khyber, the NBP and the SBP to review the progress and remove the procedural bottlenecks faced by the earthquake affectees in AJK and the NWFP in opening accounts and encashment of cheques issued to them by the government.

Central Board of Revenue Chairman Abdullah Yusuf, Relief Commissioner Maj-Gen Muhammad Farooq, DG Post Offices Agha Masood Hasan, senior officials form the ministry of finance, representative from the NWFP and ERRA also attended the meeting. Omar Ayub directed the banks to reduce the time for opening of accounts and encashment of cheques of earthquake affectees. The banks were also given directions that no fee/charge would be realized from affectees for opening and operating accounts. The condition of maintaining minimum balance will also not apply to the accounts of earthquake affectees in AJK and the NWFP.
