First gay ‘marriage’ in Pakistan

Surely, this is one of the reasons for the Earthquake

A gay couple have become the first to get “married” in Pakistan, according to reports from the region. Witnesses said a 42-year-old Afghan refugee held a marriage ceremony with a local tribesman of 16 in the remote Khyber region bordering Afghanistan.

Gay marriage is not legal in conservative Muslim Pakistan.

On hearing of the wedding, a tribal council told the pair to leave the area or be killed for breaking religious and tribal “values and ethics”.

A local Urdu-language newspaper said the elder man, named as Liaquat Ali, had taken a local boy called Markeen as “his male bride”.

The paper said the boy’s impoverished parents accepted 40,000 rupees (£380) for their son’s hand in marriage.

“The marriage was held amid usual pomp and show associated with a tribal wedding,” it said.

Malik Waris Khan, a prominent local politician and former federal minister, confirmed to AFP that the marriage had taken place.

“I checked the report with people in Tirah Valley and they confirmed it,” he said.

Although it remains a taboo subject, homosexuality is relatively common in Pakistan, says the BBC’s correspondent Aamer Ahmed Khan in Islamabad.

Increasingly, gay couples are living together in some of the big cities such as Karachi and Islamabad, but gay marriages remain unheard of, he says.

Pakistani law punishes sodomy with imprisonment ranging from two years to life.

Some Islamic provisions prescribe 100 lashes for the act or even death by stoning.

A gay couple caught having sex were lashed publicly in the Khyber region in May.

    Nawaz Bashir Says:

I am not shocked! We all know what is happening around us and what is the cause? Simply put, our attitude individualy to shy away from religion by making over-used excuse that Mulla’s have made Islam difficult to follow. Couldn’t we read Quran’s translation by ourselves? Who is asking us to follow west?
Unless and until, we would not try to understand the message of Allah told us by Holy Prophet (S.A.W), we will continue to take plungs in the river of “Educated Ignorance”!

    Claire Says:

I am a Christian and I understand that all of you come from an Islamic point of view. Nevertheless, I do believe that there are similar beliefs that we can work through.

    Indisputable Fact #1:
Homosexuality is a result of BOTH nature and circumstances. In other words, it is possible to be born a homosexual with the tendency to be attracted towards the same sex, as it is possible to be changed into one. Scientists have experimented with organisms as simple as fruit flies and have observed that some fruit flies have the natural inclination to mate with the same sex and others, when altered by their experiments, would be turned into “homosexual” fruit flies. Most people choose to believe only one way is possible. But this is a conclusion that stems from ignorance. Either way, homosexuality is not the sin that should be condemned. The just God that I believe in hates lust, sexual immorality or destruction of the sacredness of the body and crimes that follow like prostitution, gang rape, adultery and others.

    Indisputable Fact #2:
The fact that homosexuality existed and exists in every nation of this world through all of history and that conscientious, intellectual, and spiritual people are homosexual is a testament to the second indisputable fact that homosexuality is not a culturally generated sin but a pervasive and NATURAL phenomenon.

    Indisputable Fact #3:
Ridan, you should be thrown off a cliff. That was a joke. But in all seriousness, if all wrongdoers were thrown off of cliffs, who would remain alive? Are you adding or detracting from this “sad and degenerate” society? Is your condemnation adding or detracting from this “sad and degenerate” society? If you are detracting, and I will add that I think you are, then you should think before you say things like “they should be thrown off a cliff.”

  7. 94
    Ridan Says:

The ‘couple’ if you can call them that, should be thrown off a cliff. It is against everything Islam stands for and they are ruining the world we live in.

On top of that we have the audacity to question Allah and his decisions. We incur his wrath and then question it.

We are a sad and degenerate society.

  8. 93
    bruce Says:

How very sad that the Muslim world did not go through an
“age of reason” that discredited the utter nonsense of Christianity and led to the formation of secular society
in the west, with the freedom of the individual being greater than the authority of any religion. There is no hope of intellectual progress while society is dominated by primitive religion.

    usman khan Says:

This is nothing new for Pakistan even though Pakistan is supposed to be a ‘pak’ muslim country .Homosexuality is very common in Pakistan and has been for decades..Its just a secret network and evry one knows that it happens but yet everyone turns a blind eye.

In my personal opinion i think that the only punishment that could be justified for homosexuals in Pakistan should be that of a execution or to be castrated in public. so that it sends clear warnings to other ‘puffters’who practice this degrading act.
If Pakistan authorities do not do anything then you will have more and more gays getting married and it will become a trend .
with reference to the ‘gay’ marriage ,this could have only happened if ‘people’ allowed this to happen.so as i mentioned before ‘they’ have all conspired or have facilitated into having a 40 year man marry a 16year old boy.
Pakistan is infested with corruption, fraud, and ‘zinaa’.
and if it was true that Pakistan was created on the grounds of becoming a muslim state then surly god will unleash calamaties such as earthquakes that took so many innocent lives away…
Homesexuality can be blamed but there are still more serious unheard ’sins’ and crimes commited in Pakistan that we will most probably never hear of.There is clearly no fear from god.
Finaly there is no need of scientific research required to why the earthquake happened.
Its very simple ,no leaf rattles without the will of god,No cloud moves without the will of god .The earth had to move because it was the will of god.

    Regards
    Usman

Truly heartattack to me.I think so that Govt, should notice of this thing and kill them in a place like arena, that people see it and do’t even to think to do it.

    David Says:

Truly disturbing. But I think Pakistan will reap what it had sown. pakistanis should be ashamed for what they ended to be. They have allowed this kafir musharaf to rule them and send the country in the path of destruction. I am not Pakistani but a jew revert to Islam and I have read the history of Pakistan. I am ashamed to the deccadence and the complacency of pakistanis. you have truly disgraced the milions of Muslims who died to create pakistan, you have shamed the likes of Iqbal and Maududi.

  13. 88
    Zafar in Virginia Says:

I think that one should not jump to a conclusion at the very first reading of such a story. I know that homosexuality is a taboo in Islamic countries like Pakistan but we cannot ignore the fact that it is practiced by many people in Pakistan and prhaps in Iran, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere. The only difference is that homosexuals are out of closet in western countries whereas they stay in closet in eastern countries.

I personally do not beleive that homosexuality is a genetic disorder as claimed by some medical scientists. I think it is an adopted behavior and there are no homosexual tendencies inherent to human nature. People become homosexuals either for convenience or for profit, or for lack of females for sexual tryst.

It is my assertion that all news must be checked for authenticity and validity. An action albeit violent as suggested by many of the writers above (hanging or shooting etc)is un-Islamic and inapproppriate because you can not be judge without authentic evidence. Furthermore, it is the job of shria council or a court and not a blood thirsty mob.

    Shoaib Alam Says:

I think, Ms. Nadia Nabi is absolutely right and I agree with her comments. I also think that this is a big sin for Muslim, which is given free of cost by West Country specially, USA, UK and other related country.
My message for all of the Muslims specially Pakistani that please leave all these things, from which our Allah feels angry with their peoples.

    Thnaks!

    nazia nabi Says:

i am simply shocked . it is really a big shame for muslim people. being a muslim girl i really felt slaped when i heard this news. is it like that muslims are losing faith in their religion.

    Tasneem Says:

Lets try this excercise guys and girls, with our limited knowledge in history, islam, science, psychology, lets try this exercise rather than lets say just ignoring, denying, yelling being vengeful.

We know what happens to people who steal some of our good fellows just mentioned it in the post that we cut their hands, I am sure everyone would agree, its Islamic law and everything. I want you guys to honestly cut your hands or childrens or paretns or friends who have ever stolen and again as mentioned earlier by a good gentleman who said that its not up to us to choose or decide the extend of punishment because god forbid if we research or use the brain that god has gifted nay blessed us to use for betterment of his creations, regardless of how big and small the theft was a candy, a diaper, some loose change I want you to cut their hands and then post here of how good muslims you are.

For people who like jotting down inferences; one of our Sahabah once refused to feed a Christian guest and god (Allah) replied back saying taht I have been feeding this man for all of his life and you can’t feed him for one day. So why don’t we first thing that they are the creation of God and have a purpose in this life and for people who missed reading it, absitenance meaning stopping ppl by force without reason doesn’t fix the problem.

and if you are going to start a hate crime where you are just going to hang people who you think are evil, may I remind all of you about Hitler about ethnic cleansing, about Black right movements, about native americans, about seven day war. These are examples of all the things gone wrong.

There was once a time when Islam was spread to the far stretches of West that we have 70 libraries filled iwth Islamic knowledge, history and literature in every city enligthing the minds and souls of people and now we are left to this point where we can’t even find 70 in a country and what little we learnt in our school system about religoin and history is what we are using to dispute and yell and fight.

I don’t admit I know a lot but I try to learn and have a gentle heart becaue in the end Allah knows best, God who is the true creator of me and you knows best and if he wanted those ppl dead that badly he would have smitted them down, given them AIDS it woudln’t be the first time either.

So my advice is be open, thorough, kind, gracious and don’t redden your hearts mind and souls with blood under the pretext of being religious and noble and humble. May God give us the ability to enligthen our minds and enrich our souls and guide us all towards the right path.

    S.B. Says:

I hope to Allah this is not true, but if we let this couple get married we are accepting that being gay is ok. we cant let this happn only allah is to judge whether we are good muslims or not, we all commit sins. we should ask for forgivness.
killing is not the answer, we shouldnt decide when we can kill allahs creations. allowing gay’s to get married is only a step in the sickning westernised society, the people who accepted money for the 16 yr old to get married should be ashamed of them selves, i pray to allah that nothing of this sort happens again in pakistan.
we all say that pakistan is an islamic country, yet we should see some of the things happening there eg prostitution, fraud , murder we are forgetting who we are we need to be reminded before it gets too late

    Assalam o alikum:-
Well i heard of it before visiting this website and i’ve been told by my friend to pass over a comment for this act,,well what should i say,i have no words for this IF it happened in pakistan, sorry i mentioned the country pakistan because iam very used to with this news,,,day by day this gayish act is spreading but if muslims anywhere whether it is pakistan, afghan or in any other state doing this i’ll just say that ocne in your life please DO open your Holy book,The Holy Quran and it will remind you of the Qaumai Loot and the punishment sent by Allah to his people for this sodomy kind of act.And as far as the quake is concerne,i will never ever say that it was due to this act,but we also are not well informed about the geologic changes of the bio sphere and instead of saying this that it was the disaster strucked due to homosexuality, lets just look into yourself and test your might and your faith. On my behalf…homosexuality is HARAAM in Islam and everyone being a muslim in pakistan should take a serious act for this dirty kinda thing i think one should slaughter gays infront of everyone if he finds one donig this..thanx and ALLAHHAFIZ…
    give love take love:)
