Earthquake victims in Lahore leave for AJK and NWFP

Earthquake victims living in Lahore on the Punjab government’s invitation left for their native areas on Monday.

Saba Sadiq, adviser to the Punjab chief minister on social welfare, saw the 85 families off on the chief minister’s behalf at the Social Welfare Complex.

She also addressed the farewell ceremony, saying the Punjab had again played a role in helping people and had hosted the victims for four months. She said each family was also given three months of rations including flour, rice, oil, sugar, tea, milk powder, grains, pulses and spices. She also said every victim was given Rs 1,000.

She said the chief minister had allotted special funds to help with the families’ departure and the Punjab relief commissioner would visit Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) while one officer of the Relief Department would accompany the families in each bus.

Brig (r) Syed Ghazanfar Ali, Punjab UNICEF programme officer, and Shamshad Qureshi and Prof Abdul Rauf, representatives of the families, also addressed the function and talked about the Punjab government’s efforts to help the earthquake victims staying in Lahore.

Saba Sadiq inspected the arrangements and was told that the buses would leave for Muzaffarabad, Bagh, Rawalakot, Havelian and Mansehra (both in the NWFP) in the afternoon and trucks carrying the victims’ luggage would accompany the buses.
