DAWN Relief Work
Further on DAWN’s initiative of ‘Adopt a Village‘ in the earthquake affected areas, following is an email from DAWN Relief Officer describing the process:
—-
DAWN has identified Patika, a village 17km North of Muzaffarabad, in the Neelum Valley for its relief and rehabilitation effort. This area has suffered horrific levels of death and destruction and is urgently in need of relief supplies.
We are in the process of putting up 500-600 tents as the first model village in the affected areas alongside the Neelum Valley North of Muzzaffarabad. Although Patika will be the first recipient of our foundation’s efforts, we have also identified other villages in Bagh, Rawalakot in the Azad Kashmir and in the Mansehra and Balakot areas of NWFP.
The oncoming winter is expected to be severe and our primary responsibility, for around 6000 people, will be to assist the mobilization and provision of clean drinking water and food supplies to the people within the village unit. We are also in the process of setting up with, outside donors, a large mobile field hospital in Northern Muzaffarabad to help cater the medical needs of the area and Patika.
Our volunteers are expected to work within the village, dispensary, the mobile hospital as well as the Development Cell in Muzaffarabad. This will require planners, engineers, sociologists and IT personnel. Full communications will need to be established between the three areas of activity, the rest of the country and indeed the relief donors from the rest of the world.
We are in the process of completing a basic manpower and skills utilization plan for your particular kind of skill and expertise. Once we identify this in the coming weeks, we will be able to contact you and indicate which period your services will be most required.
The organization will be headed by Mr. Fahim Zaman Khan, former administrator KMC, with powers of Mayor for the city of Karachi. He is also one of the early pioneers who worked with Edhi Foundation to set up the Edhi Air Ambulance.
During your volunteer period with us we will provide shared tent with other relief workers for your stay. We will also provide for your basic meals and other similar needs.
Each period will be defined as a 4-8 week period. Volunteers in the area will be given a choice of three time periods which they can choose from over the next 6 months.
We will be sending you a questionnaire, shortly, which requires necessary information in the given format. Apart from personal information (confidentiality is assured) information regarding your expertise will also be required.
If you are unable to arrive by yourself in Islamabad, we will arrange for your travel within Pakistan.
In the mean time please feel free to contact me if there is any further information you might require.
Thank you for all your help,
Samar Ata-Ullah
