Pakistan earthquake toll hits 30,000

The estimated toll of the South Asian earthquake on Saturday has hit 30,000, Pakistan-administered Kashmir’s works and communication minister says.

“Our rough estimates say more than 30,000 people have died in the earthquake in Kashmir,” minister Tariq Farooq said on Sunday.

“There are cities, there are towns which have been completelydestroyed. Muzaffarabad is devastated,” he added, referring to the capital of Pakistan’s sector of disputed Kashmir.

Over 18,000 dead in Pakistan from quake

Over 18,000 people were killed in Pakistan in the huge earthquake on Saturday, military spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan said.

Talking to Geo TV here on Sunday, Director General ISPR Shaukat Sultan said so far 18,020 persons were killed. A large number of people were killed in the worst hit areas of Azad Kashmir where 17155 people were killed while remaining casualties were reported from Pakistani areas.

He informed that 215 army personnel were also among the dead while 414 others sustained injuries.

He said Muzaffarabad, Bagh and Rawlakot were among the worst quake-hit areas of Azad Kashmir and so far 41188 persons were injured.


Death toll from Pakistani earthquake over 3000

The death toll from the worst ever earthquake in Pakistan has increased beyond 3000 including 1660 alone in North-West Frontier province, according to Pakistani officials.

Amongst those killed in NWFP were male and female students.

At least 200 soldiers of Pakistan Army have also died in the calamity and 300 other soldiers injured, according to reports.

Pakistna Army spokesman Sahukat Sultan told that the earthquake has also caused a heavy loss to the military infrastructure.

More serious massive losses were also been caused to country’s different areas, the spokesman said.


At least 200 Pakistani soldiers martyred in quake: ISPR

At least 200 soldiers of Pakistan army were also martyred in the Saturday quake in various parts of the country.

Spokesman for ISPR Maj Gen Shaukat Sultan said that at least 200 Jawans and officers of Pakistan Army were also martyred in quake, which rattled the different parts of country Saturday.


Quake hits 80% of Punjab and 70% of NWFP

The worst ever earthquakes in the history of this country rocking this morning has caused widespread distress to the people spanning over 80 percent of Punjab and 70 percent of the Frontier provinces, according to Metrological department.

Many villages were reportedly devastated, where it was feared to have taken a heavy toll of lives besides damages to property.

Sources told that 6 persons were killed and several injured in Murree alone, while the people kept coming to the hospital with the wounded on self help basis.

Aftershocks tremor rocked Islamabad around 2:00 pm. A massive earthquake hit the various parts of countries including Rawalpindi and Islamabad in the wee hours of Saturday.
