Cashmere for Kashmir to raise funds for quake victims

The Irfan Kathwari Foundation, a charitable group, is sponsoring a fund-raising event in New York next month to help the victims on the October earthquake in Kashmir.

Called ‘Cashmere for Kashmir,’ the two-day event on March 3 and 4 will include an auction featuring “unique pieces of cashmere clothing, accessories, and special items” at a private residence in Bedford, New York. The goal of the organisers is to raise more than a quarter of a million dollars. The proceeds will be given direct to local organisations in Kashmir, while a percentage will go to Refugees International, an advocacy group.

Organised under the direction of Farooq Kathwari, founder and chairman of the Kashmir Study Group, he formed the charitable foundation in memory of his son, Irfan. An announcement from the foundation said its mission is to assist in the relief and recovery efforts of the quake-devastated region. “We hope that soon basic needs such as shelter and food will have been met, but given the uncertainty and the severity of the winter, we will be providing assistance in these areas. Immediate funds will be directed to improving access to more remote areas and providing blankets and winterisation kits to the people in the higher elevations. One of our additional priorities in the region is to restore education. There are children who need to return to the classroom, as well as children who have never had the opportunity to be educated. Although makeshift tent schools have already been set up, much more needs to be accomplished.”
