7,000 population of Bali Mang still without relief

Over 7,000 population of Bali Mang on the outskirts of Battal town in district Mansehra, severely hit by the devastating earthquake of Saturday last, has not been reached by any government agency, NGO or volunteers so far despite the lapse of four days.

A doctor working with an NGO phoned The News office from Mansehra Tuesday night and narrated the ordeal of the area people while quoting injured treated by him from the nearby Malkora locality.

Quoting the eyewitnesses, the doctor said on condition not to be named that seven villages of Bali Mang – Pal Qum, Shawal, Kund, Dheri Nambardaran, Kund Bala, Salathi and Palai – were flattened by the trembler. Around 600 houses and 250 shops were razed to the ground by the killer quake, burying alive the whole population.

No rescue team either from the government or private agencies has reached the entire area so far. Stench of animal carcases has made it difficult for people of the adjoining areas to pass through these ghost villages.

With no hope of pulling any survivor from beneath the rubble now, there is every likelihood of epidemic break out as a result of decomposition of bodies that may affect the adjoining areas and cause further human catastrophe.

The caller appealed to the government agencies, army, NGOs and volunteers to rush to the area, look for a miracle to find survivors and control the situation there. Meanwhile, there were reports of playing of politics in the distribution of aid among quake survivors of Balakot. Influential people including local nazims discriminated against the poor and hapless in distribution of essentials of life and there was need to enforce transparency so that the much-needed relief reaches the deserving people.
