Government has initiated skill training programme for quake victims

Chief Minister Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has said that a comprehensive programme has been initiated in the earthquake-affected areas for the training of local people in various construction-related skills to enable them to build their houses and earn respectable livelihood.

Talking to a delegation of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) led by its president Mian Shafqat Ali at Chief Minister’s Secretariat on Tuesday, Elahi said that the process of identifying affected families for the Punjab government’s Support a Family programme was being undertaken expeditiously. He said that the loss of lives due to the earthquake was much more than initial estimates but the people had displayed commendable spirit of unity and solidarity at this critical juncture.

Quake children at greater risk after rain, snowfall: UN

Children in the earthquake-hit areas are at greater risk of disease after recent rains and snowfall have made conditions more severe, the UN children’s agency said on Tuesday.

“Although there has been no major epidemic, many children are already suffering from acute respiratory infections in the quake-affected areas,” an official of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) said. He said that the inclusion of antibiotic cotrimoxazole in health kits provided by UNICEF to community health workers will help treat these infections, but it would be far better if parents could keep children warm and prevent them from getting sick.

Beethoven’s 9th symphony for New York quake fund-raiser

New York Carnegie Hall will host a fundraiser for South Asia earthquake victims next month with a recital of Beethoven’s greatest work, the Ninth Symphony.

The January 23 concert is aiming to raise half a million dollars, a goal that it may or may not achieve. The orchestra will be conducted by George Mathew, one of the few Indians, besides Zubin Mehta, to have achieved fame as a classical conductor. Mathew was born in the Indian state of Kerala. The idea of the concert is Mathew’s, who will bring together some of the world’s finest orchestral players to perform Beethoven’s masterpiece to help those suffering from harsh winter in the mountainous regions Azad Kashmir and NWFP.

Rain and snow lash quake zone, ground helicopters

Heavy rain and snow lashed earthquake-hit areas in Pakistan, grounding helicopters that fly relief supplies to the millions of survivors in temporary shelters.

Aid workers have warned that cold weather in the Himalayan foothills, where temperatures have already fallen below freezing, may claim more lives after the magnitude-7.6 quake on October 8 left about 87,000 dead and 3.5 million homeless.

Using helicopters, roads and mule tracks, UN and other aid groups and the Pakistan Army have been delivering tents, clothes, food and other provisions to survivors.
