Help Required in Vadi-e-Kuttla

(Comments by a reader)

I would like to draw your attention towards some places which are not under consideration (in regard of earthquake) since the 1st day i.e 8th october. The people of Vadi-e-Kuttla (related to neelam valley), or more exactly The Kopra Gali have not been receiving aid. No doubt, a big amount of money, tents, food and all other stuff has been collected for the victims of earth quake, but none of these things reached in Kopra Gali. These poor people are suffering a lot, they are dying in cold , they are hungry and injured but no one knows anything about them. A few days ago a helicopter threw two bags, one of which was lost and the left only one bag could, obviously not fulfil the needs of thousands of people there. A person over there (vadi e kuttla or kopra gali) is giving us all the info from his cellphone, he told us that the only way to help the people there is by HELICOPTER, because reaching there by road is almost impossible as all the ways are blocked.

DAWN Relief Work

Further on DAWN’s initiative of ‘Adopt a Village‘ in the earthquake affected areas, following is an email from DAWN Relief Officer describing the process:

DAWN has identified Patika, a village 17km North of Muzaffarabad, in the Neelum Valley for its relief and rehabilitation effort. This area has suffered horrific levels of death and destruction and is urgently in need of relief supplies.

We are in the process of putting up 500-600 tents as the first model village in the affected areas alongside the Neelum Valley North of Muzzaffarabad. Although Patika will be the first recipient of our foundation’s efforts, we have also identified other villages in Bagh, Rawalakot in the Azad Kashmir and in the Mansehra and Balakot areas of NWFP.

Trip to Muzaffarabad

I wanted to share my trip to Muzaffarabad with you all. The purpose is not to brag that I have been there and done that. The one and only purpose behind sharing my story is that you all get to know, from someone like you, what is happening at this very moment while we sit in our air-conditioned offices thinking how the time will pass till iftar, what we will have for iftar and what we will do afterwards.

Bollywood stars host show for earthquake relief

Bollywood personalities Mahesh Bhatt, Shatrughan Sinha and Ashok Pandit pledged to hold shows across the country to raise funds for rehabilitation of quake-hit people on both sides of the LoC and asked the corporate sector to chip in with their fair share.

They were speaking while visiting the worst-hit Salamabad and adjoining villages near the Line of Control devastated by the October 8 earthquake.

“Pakistan film actors helped us in raising funds for tsunami victims. It is now our turn to reciprocate that gesture,” Bhatt said.

Oxfam innovates to tackle shelter crisis in earthquake zone

Oxfam International is having to innovate to fill the gaps in shelter provision for the hundreds of thousands of people left homeless by the recent Asian earthquake.

oxfam innovative tents

The current lack of thermal tents combined with the massive logistical challenges in getting aid to the most inaccessible areas is putting thousands of victims of the quake in danger.

“The lack of easily available tents means we’re having to think of new ways of doing things and fast. We’ve already taken over a tent factory in Pakistan but we’re also looking for other solutions. In India we’ve just designed and built a shelter that ordinary people can put together from locally available materials.
